The bespoke experience begins with an invitation to visit our flagship store in London for a one-on-one appointment. An opportunity to explore colour, proportion, setting and style, and introduce you to Garrard’s exquisite diamonds and coloured gemstones, our designers are expert at channelling loves and passions into a high jewellery piece to wear and treasure.

The Bespoke Design Process

A detailed, iterative process, our designers will translate everything they have learned about you into a beautiful, completely unique design that perfectly encapsulates you and your personal preferences. Only when you are completely satisfied with the design will our master artisans begin handcrafting your bespoke piece.

Royal Seal of Approval

The history of our royal patrons and their bespoke high jewellery commissions is recorded in our royal ledgers, which remain at 24 Albemarle Street to this day. They give a fascinating insight into some of the most extravagant bespoke jewels ever created by Garrard, including the Lover’s Knot Tiara commissioned for Queen Mary in1913 and the Girls of Great Britain Tiara, which is worn by HM The Queen on the front of every Bank of England banknote.

What is the process for commissioning bespoke jewellery at Garrard?
Led by Creative Director Sara Prentice, each member of our all-female design team intuitively understands the very personal relationship with jewellery.The bespoke process begins with an appointment, either at our flagship store in London, remotely, or during a house visit. The team regularly travels to locations around the world, giving you the opportunity to meet with them in person at select locations. During this initial appointment you’ll explore a world of colour, proportion, setting and style, using Garrard’s exquisite diamonds and coloured gemstones as reference to help your idea take shape.An important part of the process is getting to know you and to understand your initial idea or inspiration, always offering expert guidance on what will endure for generations. Initial sketches are drawn by hand as creation begins, working closely together and iterating until the final design. Family members are very welcome to join you – many of our commissions involve entire families, crafting intricate transformative pieces that family members can make their own.We are a small and highly skilled team with a deep understanding of the technicalities of the workshop. Can Garrard recreate or modernise heirloom designs?
If the item is an existing Garrard piece, we are able to modernise or customise it, but we cannot directly replicate any original works by Garrard or any other jewellery house. Heirloom designs may act as inspiration for a completely new and original piece that tells your story while honouring the past. Contact our customer relationship team to discuss.
How long does it take to create a custom piece of fine jewellery?
It depends on the complexity of the design and the craftsmanship required to bring your design to life. Some bespoke commissions can take a matter of months. If you have a particular date or deadline, our team will be more than happy to advise you of a sensible lead time. Contact our customer relationship team for guidance.
Has Garrard created bespoke jewellery for royalty and high-profile clients?
Our bespoke jewellery commissions are some of the most important jewels ever made, housed in the Royal Collection and protected at The Tower of London. Named Crown Jeweller in 1843, a role bestowed on us by Queen Victoria, our bespoke commissions for royalty first started in 1735. They include The Imperial State Crown, redesigning The Sovereign’s Sceptre, The Lover’s Knot Tiara, and Queen Victoria’s Small Diamond Crown.
