Rings FAQs

What makes a coloured gemstone and diamond ring a distinctive alternative to a classic diamond ring?

A coloured gemstone and diamond ring stands apart from a diamond solitaire with striking visual personality and distinct individuality. Colour means so much more – intentional and meaningful, adding an emotional dimension that a white diamond simply cannot replicate. The pairing of a coloured centre stone with diamonds is as versatile as a single diamond. Either set as a halo, along the band, or as flanking side stones, diamonds enhance the gemstone's colour by drawing the light within to reveal its unique hue.

There is a long royal and aristocratic tradition behind coloured gemstone rings, offering a sense of heritage and romance that makes them feel both timeless and meaningfully different from the conventional choice of a diamond. Garrard is the proud maker of the most famous ring ever made, a colour gemstone and diamond cluster chosen by Princess Diana as her engagement ring and now worn by Catherine, Princess of Wales.

What is the story behind Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring and its connection to Garrard?

It was Garrard’s honour to hold a long-standing relationship with Princess Diana long after her departure from the Royal Family. As Crown Jeweller, Garrard was asked to present a selection of rings for Princess Diana to choose from. She selected a regal Ceylon blue sapphire cluster with diamond surround. Regarded as the most famous ring ever made, Diana set a trend for coloured gemstone engagement rings that continues to captivate generation after generation. The ring is now worn by Catherine, Princess of Wales. An iconic signature of our jewellery house, the Garrard cluster is a living design motif in constant evolution within the 1735 Collection. How are gemstones and diamonds selected for Garrard rings?

Garrard is renowned for expertise in coloured gemstones, only selecting the finest natural stones for their colour, clarity and natural beauty. Each stone is individually and responsibly selected by trusted qualified gem experts from around the world. As colour gemstones are inherently unique, many designs are sketched specifically for a stone we first source, rather than simply sourcing a stone for an already sketched design. This is a core design principle now rare in jewellery making that Garrard continues to uphold, an example of our passion and dedication to the artistry of gemstone jewellery. Each creation is extraordinary, showcasing the finest examples of natural gems from around the world.

Are gemstone and diamond rings suitable for everyday wear?

Diamonds are a fine choice for everyday wear due to their very high hardness, making them resistant to scratching by anything but another diamond. Gemstones with high hardness, such as sapphires and rubies, also make a good choice for everyday jewellery. It is always advisable to take care when wearing a gemstone set ring to avoid knocks and abrasions. Even diamonds can break if not treated with care.

What settings best showcase gemstones and diamonds in fine rings?

It will depend on the gemstone. Diamonds often show to best effect when set in a way that allows maximum volume of light into the stone. As a rule, the setting should balance enough metal to ensure your stone is secure, while avoiding covering more than is necessary for the stone to shine. The style of setting is at the discretion of our design team, mostly down to what most suits the stone or piece.
